About Erlin Geffrard
Erlin Geffrard is a true artist, blending mixed media, installation art, and performance art seamlessly into his eclectic repertoire. He currently calls Philadelphia home and is known for his vibrant, multifaceted style. From classic family portraits to imaginings of the mind, he merges a wide range of styles and repurposed materials into each creation, allowing them to come to life through rhythmic combinations. His current series reflects his fascination with family memory, ritual, and popular culture, examining the fascinating connections between the three.
From Palm Beach, Florida, and Haitian descent, he began studying painting and design at the San Francisco Art Institute. Eventually, he moved on to earn an M.F.A. degree at the University of Pennsylvania, where he now teaches. His art pieces always reflect his passion for the deeper issues, as seen through the overlap of fine arts, commercial hip hop culture, and class, race, place, gender, and religion through subject matter and material.
Geffrard is known for incorporating the viewer and sound into his installation art, originally under the moniker, Kreyola Kid, a performance artist. His pieces resonate with a message of refugee-like experiences, derived from his Haitian background, upbringing in Florida, and underground culture in the Bay Area. Philadelphia Contemporary's 2018 Festival for the People showcased his newest banners, which celebrated Philadelphia neighborhoods with a striking nod to Haitian vodou flags. Audiences also saw works by Michel Auder, Mel Chin, and Rikrit Tiravanija.
His pieces are not only celebrated in his current city of Philadelphia but worldwide. Exhibited at prestigious locations such as the Luggage Store Gallery, American Academy in Rome, David Nolan Gallery, Humboldt State University, and New Image Art, Geffrard's work is part of the revered Petrucci Family Foundation Collection. He continues to evolve, developing new methods to showcase his mesmerizing talents.
